But their placid life is soon to be changed after the three buddies enlist in the airborne infantry to go to Vietnam. So they all celebrate a goodbye at Steven's wedding and they leave for Vietnam. They are captured by the enemy and forced to play games of Russian Roulette to amuse their guards. They escape and Mike returns home to find Nick has stayed in Vietnam and Steven is handicapped after losing his legs and the use of one arm after the escape. Mike finds that deer hunting has changed for him after Vietnam and he returns to Vietnam during the fall to attempt to rescue Nick

R.I.p. micheal cimino. as big of a film buff as I am i've actually never seen this before, but I bet you made a masterpiece of filmmaking when you directed this film and it will continue to be loved by many cinema lovers even after the time of your passing. also, we couldn't thank you enough for helping launch the acting career of christopher walken. you will surely be missed.

I remember watching this film 3 years ago. I literally screamed and cried like Deniro, Nicky! Noooo! Why? i was in a state of morning two-three days after watching The Deer Hunter. Before they went to war Nicky asked mike one thing, to bring him back. Mike left without Nicky and saw what the world was without him. When mike went and saw Steven and saw all the money nick was making from Russian roulette he saw that he had made a bad decision and felt it was his duty to go back and try and save Nicky before something bad had happened. He probably also felt a little guilty because now he was living with Nicky's girlfriend and that only happened because mike left without Nicky. The worst part about Mike going back for Nicky is that now he has to live with it being his fault that Nicky died because if he had never made Nicky play he never would have gotten "hooked" to the game.
